Why don’t we take a journey together?

by Craig McBreen · 41 comments · General

I’ve stated that I would like to enter the public speaking arena more than a few times.

You know, step up to the dais and do my best to not make a fool of myself and maybe even help a good citizen or two?

What better place to proclaim my objectives than right here?

Here’s why:
1. I want to use this accountability platform to keep me on task.
2. I just might motivate a few people out there with similar goals in mind.
3. To follow through on my own advice and just go out and “do!”
4. This stuff is no fun alone. So, you with me?

Let me explain:
I’m gunning for local groups and associations, but my focus is already on the professional circuit. I’m thinking big, folks.

I want to step up to the lectern at BlogWorld, really. Stop chuckling, I hear you.

If I said I’d like to speak at TEDx, you might break out into spastic fits of laughter, so I’ll keep that one to myself for now.

A boy’s gotta dream, right? We call that long-term vision.

Call my crazy, but I’ve been a member of Toastmasters for years and that counts for something, right?

When it comes to speaking, our old friend BlogWorld is a bit more realistic, so I’ll set my sites on that familiar conference for sometime in the future. But before I head in that direction I need some street cred, right about NOW.

You think I’m kidding, right?

Slightly deranged maybe, but I’m as serious as a heart attack.

Here’s the deal.
With no speaking page, zero videos and el zilcho in paid speaking experience, what’s a boy gonna do? If you’re convulsing in fits of laughter right now, I don’t blame you.

But I am excited, determined and ready to roll.

Since I’m making a public pronouncement I might as well lay out the steps, right?

But before I do that. I want to know who is with me? Please read on.
I really do! If it is public speaking or something entirely different, I would love for a few of you to join me on this journey.

What do you want to do?

Why are you not doing it?

You want to, don’t you? I know you do.

Well, you now have a reason to join me.

Oh, about those steps:
1. Video:
Priority number one is to get that first … “What the hell are you going to speak about?” … video up for all to see. I just might convince a venue or two to consider this former chubby introvert.

My first video goes up in three weeks. Hold me to it, will you, comrade?

Back at ya:
If you have a big first step, please let me know so I can hold YOU to it. I need a few partners in this journey.

2. A speaking page:
How can I convince anyone to hear me out if I don’t have a speaking page? You know a place where I will actually list the topics I’ll be speaking on?

Well, that’s going up in three weeks too. Keep me on task, okay?

Your turn:
I want to know about those steps in your journey. Maybe we can even exchange a few emails and keep each other in check, eh?

3. A first “professional” speaking venue:
This is tough one, because it really depends on who will consider someone like me. I will tell you this: You won’t be sorry. I’ll do everything in my power to make this the best talk on X, Y or Z you’ve ever heard.

X, Y and maybe even Z will be detailed on my speaking page. Stay tuned.

If you have a venue in mind, let me know.

If there is a function where you’ll be entertaining the hoards, let me know.

I need some companions in this journey. If you want an accountability partner, let me know.

What say you? Will you join me? Maybe we can even create an event of our own one day.

Is there one Big Thing you want to accomplish in 2012?

Any suggestions on professional events I should consider?

If there is anyone out there with a great speaking page or video page, let me know, will ya?

I can’t wait for the video Craig. That’s going to be awesome. Are you creating it all by yourself?

I have been watching the first videos from Ruth Zive, and I’m so impressed and I can’t believe how she was able to make such a professional video. And now it’s your turn, I’m falling behind :)

And for your speaking engagements, I’m 100% sure that you’ll make it, no matter if it’s BlogWorld or TEDx, it’s all about focus and the mindset. And I know that you have what it takes. It’s going to be a fun ride, and I’m going to follow you all the way.

Hi Jens,

For now, it’s just me, so we’ll see how impressive it is. ;)

Yes, I just discovered Ruth the other day, thanks to you actually. I agree and think her video was great.

I want to do this AND motivate a few to push themselves as well.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! Glad you’re on board and love the big changes over at your place! Exciting times for Sly Marketing!

This is great Craig. I feel like you were talking to me. Ha. With the conversations we have had, I know you will accomplish your goals. I am right there with you my friend. Thanks for writing such a great post. I have dreamed and thought of speaking at TEDx too. (Ok, we both might be crazy) We can do this. This really is how I feel. I want to do the same things you are talking about, regarding speaking. I will support you all the way and be an accountability partner as well. If it wasn’t 5:40 am in Seattle, I would call you right now to thank you and encourage you. This is fantastic and I (like Jens) will be following and supporting your journey, all the way to the big stage and yes, that means TEDx brother ! You can do this !

All crazies on board! So glad you’re joining and supporting the journey. WE can do this!

Thank you, Sir.

Uh, you can hold your own TEDx, it’s not that hard. Just sayin. Now if you want to at TED, why not go to one of the auditions this year. They are picking over 50 percent of their speakers through crowdsourcing. In fact, there is one a hop, skip, and a jump across from you in Vancouver http://conferences.ted.com/TED2013/auditions/
Now how is that for jumping right in.

Hi Del,

First of all, thanks for dropping in.

I had no idea I could hold my own TEDx. I’ve talked to several people about possibly organizing a small event, but not this one. Will have to look into it.

TED is certainly shooting big and thanks for letting me know about this. I appreciate you including the link and will look into it.

Here’s to jumping right in!

Thanks again.

Craig,

You’ve got a friend.

I just celebrated my 10th Anniversary with Toastmasters yesterday, after speaking at my first PAID gig the night before. I can feel you brother.

Alright, here is my intent and hold me accountable, will ya? (My Skype name is MisterWeirdo :-))

1. Launch the “Living With Delight” blog on my 58th Birthday, a little over six week from now.
2. Have at least one video, along with the Speaking Page.
3. Deliver 10 paid Speeches in 2012

Let’s make this happen.

Wow, 10 years with Toastmasters is quite an accomplishment! And congrats on the paid gig.

Okay, MisterWeirdo, you got it. :)

All sounds like a plan, so let’s keep in touch. Thanks!

Will you come speak to my Rotary Club on March 19th? We have an open date; I can’t pay your airfare, but I will buy your lunch…….

I will let you in a little secret……..if speaking at blogworld is one of your goals I have absolutely no doubt not only can you make it happen but you will as well. I’ve seen who is on the dais at these events and I assure you, they might all be good speakers in their own right but I will go out on a limb and say they don’t have anything you don’t have.

My big event in 2012 is to win the lottery……..but I guess I have to buy a ticket first.

Charge on my friend; you will do well. Hopefully some of the other who have taken this route can give you advice the steps to take to get to a paid speaking gig. All I know is, I will work for food…………:)

Good luck.

I’m afraid I’d fly all the way there and you’d stiff me for lunch. ;) I wonder what any proud Floridian would think of this pasty guy who flew in from a such a foggy outpost. I haven’t been getting much sun lately.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, as I needed that. I don’t even know the line up of speakers for the next event in NYC, so will now have to go and check it out. I might even fly in to see what it’s all about.

I want to win the lottery too, but you gotta play to win and I never buy any tickets.

Thank you, Sir! Appreciate it!

Oh yeah, I have had some people approach me about running for a local political office; but whereas I don’t shy away from attention, I don’t know if the political arena is for me. Now that would be a paid speaking gig, huh?

Now if you could only work up to $60K a speech like some former presidents.

Hi Craig,

That’s a great way to hold yourself accountable and give yourself the push to achieve what you’ve set out to do.

I love creating videos but am not so sure of myself when it comes to speaking to an audience, strange I know but hey we all have something we need to address. I’ve always been concious of people around me and find it does affect the way i come across.

That’s something I need to work on but will face that when I have to, for now I’ll stick to videos as they’re what i enjoy doing. As well as encouraging others to start creating them as well.

Best of luck to you Craig, fingers crossed you’ll be able to match the $60k like the former presidents you refer to in your reply above ;)

Thanks Craig,
Barry

Hi Barry,

Thanks for dropping by! Yes, that’s why I did this. I now have to follow through.

That’s why I went through Toastmasters. It helped immensely with my initial fear of public speaking. I’m still conscious of everyone around me, but have learned to project that nervous energy much better. I’ll let you know how this venture goes, and let me know if you decide to do any speaking.

You do a great job with the videos and I’m sure you are encouraging many with your video challenge!

Thanks! Ha ha. $60k. Can you even imagine? :)

Very cool, Craig.

I have total faith and not a shadow of doubt that you can achieve all this. You’re clear, you know what you want, and I recommend relaxing and keeping it fun and playful.

Ryan Hanley suggested doing 100 questions on video: http://www.firepolemarketing.com/blog/2012/01/25/pulp-fiction/

Hmmm… I should probably setup a speaking page as well, I’m a passionate personality, I’ve spoken in front of groups before and I have a number of speaking videos on my old youtube account.

Well, thanks for the vote of confidence, Sir! I’ll do my best to relax, but if not, I’ll just channel all that energy. ;)

100 Questions. Love it, thanks!

Well, maybe we can race to see who gets their speaking page up first!

Thanks for the comments, and link.

Jsaon Fonceca February 24, 2012 at 10:28 pm

For sure man :)

In my world ‘relaxing’ is what ALLOWS the energy to be channeled to a high-degree. How much successful art did I make while I was stressed, worried, or tense?

Even in anger, there’s relaxed anger where you’re just like writing up a storm, and there’s stressed anger where you can’t even breathe or get yourself to sitdown at the keyboard.

100 questions, is all Ryan :)

Well, I considered it – I have all the tools and skills ready, but there’s something about “shoulds” — I have a policy of not doing anything if I ‘should.’ When it transforms into an “I totally want to”, then I’m down :D

I’ve read where it’s a good idea to hone your skills offering free speeches locally. But don’t give too much away for free :) . Obviously, you have much to draw on to craft some cool speeches.

With no experience and no video…now is the perfect time to put yourself out there.

Easiest way for would-be speaker circuits to hire you (paid or unpaid) to speak is if they can see examples, so create accounts on video sites and start uploading your vids to all of them — so the world can turn you into a viral sensation.

That’s an awesome idea, Craig!

I’m totally excited about your debut to the vid world.

I’d love to get my foot in the door of public speaking as well. I’ve made all of my excuses as to why I can’t, but you’ve totally motivated me to come up with reason I can. I’ve made a few videos and uploaded them to YouTube, but I took a mini break from it so that I could work on my book and eBook a bit more.

I also have thought about joining a local Toastmaster here in Atlanta, but I want to join one that is actively about business. So I’m still doing some research there.

The BIG dream for me is to do a TEDx presentation too. It’s actually on my Bucket list. Maybe I should put that on my Pinterest board. Hmmm. I think I’ll do that.

Count me in! I think that we both have what it takes to Dream Big, and do the impossible!

Loved this post bud! Motivating and Empowering… Don’t forget our mantra we discussed on my site… NEVER GIVE UP! OK, so let’s get r done! :D

You won’t be sorry you joined Toastmasters. It is a great org and will help you get much more comfortable in front of a group. Helped me immensely.

I believe you’ll get to TEDx. Why not put it up for all to see, if you really want to accomplish that goal.

Glad you’re in, Sir! And here’s to Never Giving Up!

Hope you have a great weekend.

Lol! I ain’t doing videos; but yes, I would like to speak someday, in front of about a million people hand tied because they just might throw tomatoes at me. But yes, speak I will. I was just going to recommend Barry’s video challenge and seems like he got here first!

But yes, nothing wrong with the goals part. I just had a goal to read more and lose weight and I am doing both of it! But yes, speaking, it will get into the scene someday but right now,I don’t think I am ready for it!

If you’re not doing video, don’t let Barry know. I don’t think they would throw tomatoes unless you mentioned anything about chopping off fingers.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck speaking. You will be writing about it when you do jump in, I hope.

I had very similar goals. Quitting coffee is one of them, but I keep going back.

Thanks for stopping in. I see you’re up late tonight :)

P.S. Barry knows, but I am supporting you guys on the video thing; I will make sure it gets clicks close to Gaga’s number… just remember to throw in a song!

Also, what will you be speaking about? Anything in particular? And no, I didn’t laugh. We all want to do things we are completely inexperienced about. I believe I will learn a new language someday. Although my previous two attempts ended terribly. But I will learn.. someday!

I’ll be speaking on several topics and will be writing about them soon. So stay tuned, will ya?

Thanks again, and go to sleep ;)

Oh Craig, we are all going to definitely hold you to this my friend.

Get to working on that video and don’t worry, the first ones are always the hardest. We don’t care, we know it’s your stepping stone to greatness.

As for the speaking engagements, I agree with Jason. I have all the confidence in you my friend. You seem to be the kind of person who does anything they set their minds to. Since you’ve been a member of Toastmaster for so long then you are already use to speaking in front of people. Me? No way in hell! I’ll do the videos, no problem now. Those have been 3 years in the making.

Speaking in front of people is still a huge fear of mine but I’m not in any hurry and have no desires to get on a stage so I’m good with that. I’m just glad that you know what you want and are going for it.

Best of luck to you Craig and will be looking forward to that video.

Enjoy your weekend.

Not sure about stepping stone to greatness, but you are too kind madam. Appreciate the kind words. I’m used to speaking in front of people … not fairly large groups, that’s what I need to get up and do.

You do a great job with your videos and what you’re putting out there has certainly inspired me and motivated me to get going with this.

If you have no desire to get up in front of people, I say why do it? It is something I’ve always wanted to do, now I’ll just need to see if anyone actually wants to listen. ;)
